No one ever plans for an accident to happen while traveling on vacation. However, if you’re spending a considerable amount of your vacation time on the road, getting into an accident is always a possibility. If it happens to you, it doesn’t necessarily have to mean the end of your travels. To help you handle the headache of a car accident and get back to your vacation as soon as possible, here are three tips for handling a car accident while traveling.

Call The Proper Authorities

Once you’ve addressed any wounds that need immediate medical attention, the first thing you should do is call the local police in the area you’re in. Lisa Coleman, a contributor to TravelTweaks.com, shares that although most people neglect calling the police because they feel like their accident wasn’t big enough to involve the authorities, calling the police if you get into an accident while traveling could help you immensely. When the police get involved, they will file an accident report that you can then use as documentation for your insurance and with the rental company if you’re driving a rental car. Once the police’s accident report is compiled, stories and facts won’t have a chance to get mixed up or misconstrued.

Document With Notes and Pictures

Although having the police there to make an official accident report is important, you can’t just rely on them for all documentation. For this reason, Keryn Means, a contributor to WalkingOnTravels.com, recommends taking notes and pictures of any and all damage or other relevant information. Regardless of how the accident happened, be sure you gather all the information you can either for legal purposes, insurance purposes or to help you defend yourself against claims from the car rental company you’re using. Be sure to include all of the other driver’s information in your notes so it’s easy for you to get a hold of them once you’ve left the area in which you’re traveling.

Call Your Insurance And/Or The Rental Company

After you’ve taken care of getting over the initial shock of your accident and have assessed some of the damage for yourself, Lyz Pfister, a contributor to NerdWallet.com, suggests calling both your car insurance company and the rental company you got your vehicle from if you’re driving a rental. In the event that you have car rental insurance on your normal car insurance and if you purchased additional insurance for your rental vehicle, you’ll likely have to deal with some paperwork to make sure everything’s in order for vehicle repairs or replacement and understanding who is responsible for what damages. If your car was totaled, your insurance could also give you information on how to proceed with the rest of your trip from a traveling standpoint.

Dealing with a car accident while on vacation is definitely not ideal. But by following the tips mentioned above, you should be able to get back on the road in no time.

If you’re too rigid about your decision-making processes, then it’s going to start the entire experience off on the wrong foot. Make sure you build in buffers for time, energy, and money, so that it is a relaxed experience rather than one that is full of unnecessary anxiety.
